Job summary

Eye Center of Texas is seeking an ophthalmic assistant to support our physicians across multiple locations. You will gather data on patients’ ocular health, perform tests ordered by doctors, and enter information into the electronic medical record.

Qualifications include a HS Diploma, COA eligibility preferred, and 3 years’ experience; Nextech/ICP experience is strongly preferred. We offer competitive benefits and a supportive team in a fast-paced clinical environment.

• Minimum 3 years’ experience as uncertified ophthalmic assistant preferred.
• COA Eligibility preferred.
• Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
• Perform testing ordered by doctor and determined by the type of exam scheduled.
• Act as a medical scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into electronic medical records.
• Take ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity.
• Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under physician direction.
• Assist with simple in-office procedures and ensure informed consent is obtained.
• Assist with patient education.
• Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms and comply with procedures and regulations.
• Understand documentation requirements for quality reporting and testing frequency restrictions.

Job description

Eye Center of Texas has 6 Board Certified Ophthalmologists and 8 Therapeutic Optometrist with 6 locations. Our nationally renowned physicians, combined with the most advanced medical technology, gives us the opportunity to offer our patients the highest caliber of care. We offer comprehensive medical and surgical care, including laser cataract surgery, LASIK, vision correction, glaucoma, retina and vitreous disease treatments and more.

Responsible for assisting the ophthalmologist and optometrists by gathering data pertaining to the patient’s ocular health status. The ophthalmic technician is proficient in performing appropriate clinical tests, drawing on formal education and/or clinical experience that provide a solid understanding of the theory and principles of eye care.

Clinical

• Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
• Perform testing ordered by doctor and determined by the type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and/or patient history.
• Ability to act as a medical scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into electronic medical records.
• Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.
• Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
• Ability to assist with simple in-office procedures ensures proper informed consent is obtained.
• Assists with patient education.
• Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
• Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
• Understands documentation requirements for quality reporting and testing frequency restrictions.

Administrative

• Report inventory and supply needs to leadership timely and as needed for supply ordering.
• Participate in daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings as planned and required.
• Complete work/school excuses and provide patients with medication instructions.
• Understand and accept responsibility for reporting potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer.
• Contribute to the team effort by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
• Maintain positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
