Ophthalmic Technician

We are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician whose primary role is to provide technician/clinical support to physicians. This position will be required to work at any one of Wilmer’s locations based on the clinics’ needs. Travel is required.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Records patient history including chief complaint, information on ocular history, past surgeries, medical condition, medications taken, allergies, learning assessment, falls risk and family history.
  • Checks pupil response to light by shining light into eye and watching speed with which pupils constrict; checks for afferent pupillary defect.
  • Measures central visual field using Amsler Grid.
  • Instills eye drops under physicians’ direction.
  • Measures and records distance and near visual acuity.
  • Measures and records intraocular pressure using applanation tonometry (i.e. Goldman tonometer), pneumatic tonometry, or Schiotz-type indentation tonometer.
  • Performs Humphrey visual field testing; refers patients for further testing when appropriate.
  • Performs OCT’s, IOL Master measurements, Refractions and Pentacam measurements.
  • Tests color vision, depth perception (stereopsis).
  • Screens for presence of ocular motility disorders.
  • Uses slit lamp to examine eye surface.
  • Performs special testing like Bright field Acuity Testing; otential Acuity Meter; and pachymetry.
  • Performs basic maintenance or repair of clinical equipment.
  • Performs accurate keratometry readings. adjusting keratometer reading if unobtainable.
  • Calculates intraocular lens power using various formulas to fit patient’s needs and situations either manually or by computer.
  • Responsible for exam room supplies and maintenance.
  • Ensures medication expiration dates are current.
  • Notifies Facility Manager when machines are not running properly.
  • Disinfects and maintains examination rooms.
  • Understands and practices the fundamentals of microbial control.
  • Maintains refrigerator logs and ensures sharps containers are emptied.
  • Is familiar with JCAHO requirements and ensures clinic practice is compliant with Joint Commission regulations.


Nonclinical

  • Duties may include, but are not limited to the following,
  • Responsible for Epic handling in-basket messages and answer patient questions.
  • Assists with obtaining prior authorizations from insurers for office procedures and medications.
  • Manages and maintains drug logs and supplies.
  • Helps front desk staff by assisting in triaging appointments, responding to patients’ clinical questions.
  • Provides input on templates to maximize patient flow and physician efficiency.
  • Manages and orders medications for intravitreal injections.
  • Assists with tracking and processing of forms (i.e., MVA, disability, FLMA, Workers comp).
  • Has general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy and physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases and ocular emergencies.
  • Maintains required ophthalmic technician certification.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent
  • One year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician. Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Asst (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date. CPR certification also required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a clinical office setting as an ophthalmic technician.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
