Job summary

Dakota Eye Institute in Bismarck, ND is hiring a Full Time Ophthalmic Assistant to support physicians and staff in a fast-paced eye-care clinic.

You will collect patient information, explain tests, document history, and assist with procedures, photography, and instrument maintenance. Strong communication and computer literacy are essential; HS diploma required with a preference for ophthalmology experience.

Responsibilities

  • Acquaints new patients with office procedures.
  • Informs patients of purpose of tests and how tests affect them.
  • Obtains patient history including chief complaint and ocular/general history.
  • Performs accurate documentation and measurements as ordered.
  • Provides fundus, exterior and anterior segment photographs, including FA's.
  • Performs A-scans and Manual Keratometry.
  • Assists physicians with injections while maintaining sterile technique.
  • Assists with minor surgery and laser procedures, following sterile protocols.
  • Monitors patient flow to keep exam rooms full.
  • Travels to satellite clinics as needed.

If you enjoy working in a fast-paced healthcare environment and want to play an essential role in patient outcomes, this opportunity is for you. You'll partner closely with physicians to collect critical patient information that supports accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.

Job Responsibilities
  • Acquaints new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed.
  • Informs patients of purpose of tests the technician is performing, and how the patient will be affected during the tests.
  • Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications,
  • Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks as ordered by the physician.
  • Provides fundus, exterior and anterior segment photographs, including FA's.
  • A-scans (all methods) and Manual Keratometry
  • Assists physicians with injections, maintaining sterile technique.
  • Assists physician with minor surgery, maintaining practice standards of sterile technique and infection control.
  • Assists physician with laser procedures.
  • Monitors patient flow, ensuring the physician exam rooms are always full.
  • Other tasks specific to the physician's needs as a result of new technologies.
  • Travels to satellite clinics as needed
Instrument Maintenance
  • Troubleshoots instruments as necessary.
  • Replaces bulbs.
  • Checks connections.
  • Performs archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Performs maintenance of instrument sterility.
QualificationsEducation and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years experience in a healthcare setting; ophthalmology preferred
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Provides quality patient care for all patients, directly or indirectly
  • Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Empathetic personality with concern for patient’s needs
  • Strong organization with attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team and be a positive team member
  • Demonstrated computer literacy
  • Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive work ups on three patients per hour
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk and stand for eight hours.
  • Ability to type or write legibly in a dimly-lit setting
  • Ability to hear softly spoken words.
  • Ability to assist wheelchair-bound patients.
