Job summary

Vance Thompson Vision Clinic Prof L is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant in Fargo, ND to join a patient‑centred team. You will perform patient workups, visual tests, and assist with diagnostic procedures while ensuring smooth patient flow and strong communication with physicians.

Ideal candidates bring high school completion, some ophthalmic training or AAO coursework, and a patient‑focused attitude. This role offers competitive benefits and on‑site work in Fargo.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • AAO home study training preferred for ophthalmic assistants.
  • Previous patient care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performing patient workups and preliminary tests including visual acuity and patient history.
  • Conducting diagnostic tests such as keratometry and pachymetry as directed.
  • Facilitating efficient patient flow and coordinating with OD/MD as needed.
  • Triaging patient calls and resolving concerns to achieve patient satisfaction.
  • Opening/closing exam lanes and maintaining organized work areas.
  • Sending prescriptions to pharmacies and handling prior authorizations as needed.
  • Participating in team meetings and reporting progress to improve communication.
  • Engaging in ongoing professional development to enhance skills.

You Will Make an Impact By
  • Performing patient workups and preliminary tests including visual acuity, patient history, lensometry and other tests in accordance with protocol.
  • Performing various diagnostic tests as directed, but not limited to, keratometry, topography, tonometry, pachymetry and visual fields as indicated.
  • Facilitating efficient patient flow by monitoring schedules, patient medical records, and potential schedule conflicts; resolving and communicating with OD/MD as necessary.
  • Triaging patient phone calls by answering questions and resolving concerns as directed to achieve patient satisfaction.
  • Ensuring the opening, closing, maintenance and stocking of exam lanes and maintaining order work areas.
  • Sending prescriptions to patients' pharmacies as requested by the doctor, and handling prior authorization requests as needed.
  • Participating in regular team meetings and reporting team progress to ensure effective team and inter‑department communications.
  • Actively participating in ongoing professional self‑development to enhance training and skills.
You Have
  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience and/or training with completion of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) home study preferred.
  • Previous patient care experience preferred.
