Job summary

Tenet Healthcare is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant in Corpus Christi, TX. You will greet patients professionally, document histories, and support physicians with diagnostic tests; you will also administer eye drops, assist with contacts and ensure smooth clinic flow.

The role requires basic ophthalmic testing, patient education, and accurate medical records management. Travel between offices may be required, and CPR/BLS certification is mandatory.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent; COA or COT training highly preferred.
• Preferred: 6 months to 1 year of ophthalmic assistant experience.
• Active CPR/BLS certification required.
• Proficiency with medical software and device operation.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients professionally and document pertinent medical and ophthalmic history on forms.
• Perform basic diagnostic tests accurately to support physician or optometrist.
• Administer eye drops and medications; insert/remove contacts as needed.
• Triages patients based on appointment time and acuity to maintain flow.
• Travel between offices to staff clinics as required.
• Prepare patients for procedures and educate them before/after as appropriate.
• Ensure medical records are ordered, secured, and correctly labeled.
• Perform distance/near acuity, visual fields, stereo and color testing.
• Operate lensometry and refractometry with minimal supervision.
• Perform keratometry, IOL Master, Pachymetry, Topography and pupil measurements.

Job description

To greet patients in a professional, courteous manner and obtain and document pertinent medical and ophthalmic patient history on the appropriate forms. This person is also responsible for basic clinical and diagnostic testing responsibilities.

Performs basic diagnostic tests accurately and in a way that instills patient confidence and assist physician or optometrist with clinical procedures, administers eye drops and oral medications and inserts and removes contacts

Triages patients appropriately based on appointment time and acuity of problem prepares patient for doctor and maintains smooth, efficient flow throughout clinic

Must be able to travel between offices as needed to staff other clinics. Adheres to all administrative and clinical practice policies and procedures. Maintain efficient patient flow in exam area and keep patient informed of waiting status

Provide accurate and consistent documentation. Provide education to patients before and after procedures in terms they can understand, providing written instructions as available.

Ensure that all medical records are in appropriate order, secured in the chart and each page contains patients full name and birthday before returning to medical records

Obtain patient history. Accurately test patients distance acuity, near acuity, confrontation visual fields, stereo and color testing

Perform lensometry on singe, bifocal, and progressive lenses as well as transposition accurately with minimal guidance

Able to perform Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer accurately. Able to perform refractometry with minimal assistance

Has a basic understanding of ophthalmic medications including name, strength, dosage and reason for use. May be assigned ASC duties as appropriate, ranging from Provider assistance to running of lasers or related items

Able to correctly perform the following procedures without supervision: Keratometry (ARK); IOL Master; Pachymetry; Topography; Check angles with slit lamp; Identify pupil abnormalities and perform careful pupil measurements.

Education

• Required: High School Diploma or equivalent; Completion of COA or COT Training Program is highly preferred

Experience

• Preferred: 6 months to a year of experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant

Certifications

• Required: Active CPR/BLS through an AHA accredited program or agency.

Knowledge and Skills

• Proficiency using a computer and a lensometer
