Atrium Health's eye care team in Rome, GA is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant to support ophthalmology services. The role requires a high school diploma or GED and about one year of related work experience; certification within one year and CPR are required.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required; 1 year eye-care experience preferred.
  • Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant within 1 year; CPR certification required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain visual acuity, measure lensometry, record intraocular pressure, and prep for exams.
  • Record patient medical/ocular history, confirm allergies, update medications.
  • Perform Automated Visual Field Testing and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Ensure exam rooms and lanes are stocked with supplies.
  • Maintain required competencies and CPR certifications; participate in continuing education.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and screening areas.
  • Model quality patient care and deliver service at all times.
  • Perform other duties for non-certified ophthalmic assistant role.

Job description

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or GED equivalent. One year work experience, preferably in eye-related field. Previous work experience in ophthalmology preferred.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:

Must acquire certification of Certified Ophthalmic Assistant within one year of employment in order to maintain employment. CPR certification.

Essential Functions
  • Performs basic preliminary testing including but not limited to obtaining visual acuity, lensometry, measure and record intraocular pressure using tonopen, administers topical eye medications per physician order in preparation for ophthalmic exam, obtains vital signs as needed documenting in EMR.
  • Records relevant detailed patient medical/ocular history, confirms allergies and updates medications.
  • Performs Automated Visual Field Testing. Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot visual field equipment problems and begin repair process following procedures.
  • Ensures exam rooms and lanes are stocked with needed supplies.
  • Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, required continuing education, and CPR certification during employment.
  • Escorts patients to exam rooms and screening areas in the department
  • Demonstrates dedication to patient service and care by serving as a role model in delivering quality patient care to all patient at all times.
  • Performs other job related duties incidental to the work described here in and based on a non certified ophthalmic assistant.
