Job summary

UCSD Ophthalmology seeks a patient-focused ophthalmic assistant to support exam rooms, assist with minor in-office laser procedures and injections, and help maintain timely patient flow at Shiley Eye Center and satellite clinics.

Under physician supervision, duties include taking patient history, performing vision tests, organizing supplies, and educating patients about clinic services. Occasional travel to satellites and willingness to work variable hours, including Saturdays, are required.

Qualifications

• Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science; or two years of college courses in the natural sciences plus two years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of laboratory hygiene, biohazard handling, and universal precautions.
• Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public and medical personnel.

Responsibilities

• Participate in patient care involving history, diagnostic vision tests, and visual field examinations.
• Assist physicians with minor in-office laser procedures and injections.
• Maintain timely and courteous patient flow and organize stock in examination rooms.
• Ensure clean, orderly rooms and proper sterilization of ophthalmology equipment.
