Job summary

University of California - San Diego Medical Centers in San Diego is seeking an ophthalmology support professional to assist physicians with patient care, including history taking, tonometry, visual field testing and refractive measurements.

Under supervision, you will maintain patient flow, organize exam rooms, disinfect equipment, and help train staff. Occasional travel to satellite clinics may be required.

Qualifications

• Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science; or two years of college courses in the natural sciences plus two years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to perform tonometry, visual field testing, and related ophthalmic measurements.
• Ability to take patient history and document in patient records.
• Ability to communicate courteously with patients and medical staff.
• Knowledge of ophthalmic diseases, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
• Infection control and sterilization knowledge.
• Laboratory hygiene and universal precautions.
• Ability to develop patient scheduling/appointment systems.
• Ability to train patients, staff, and students.
• Sterilize and maintain ophthalmology equipment and supplies.

Responsibilities

• Participate in patient care involving history, diagnostic vision tests and visual field examinations.
• Maintain timely and courteous patient flow.
• Organize and stock each examination room.
• Disinfect and sterilize ophthalmology equipment.
