Job summary

Lehigh Valley Health Network in Pennsylvania seeks an ophthalmology assistant to support diagnostic procedures, document chief complaints, medical history, and ocular findings, and assist the provider with treatments and injections.

You will perform tests such as pressures, visual acuity, refractions, topography; administer eye drops, transcribe results, prepare rooms, and help maintain equipment in a fast-paced ophthalmology clinic.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED.
• 1 year experience as an ophthalmology assistant or 1 year experience as a medical assistant.
• Familiarity with the meaning and use of medical terminology and abbreviations.
• Good computer skills using a medical management application.
• Knowledge of anatomy of the eye, ocular conditions, and ocular imaging equipment.
• Knowledge of patient rights and laws relative to those rights, such as HIPAA.
• COA - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire

Responsibilities

• Performs preliminary ophthalmic work such as obtaining pressures, checking visual acuities, and completing a slit lamp exam.
• Performs automated and manual testing such as auto and manual refractions, auto keratometry, corneal topography, pachymetry, tonometry, and confrontation visual fields.
• Administers topical eye drops and ointments upon written physician order or written protocol.
• Transcribes results of patient exams on medical record as physician orally dictates during the patient exam.
• Assists with minor surgery procedures, intraocular injections, and laser treatments in exam/treatment rooms including prepping patients for sterile procedures.
• Reviews patients charts prior to physician exam to anticipate procedures and supplies or equipment that may be needed.
• Maintains equipment inventory and sterilizes surgical instruments; and maintains exam/treatment rooms.
