Job summary

NJRetina in Elizabeth, New Jersey, is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant for a full-time, non-exempt position. You will support physicians with diagnostic tests, measurements, and procedures essential to patient evaluation and treatment planning.

The role requires accurate documentation, compassionate patient care, and maintaining exam room readiness while facilitating patient education. Travel between offices is required to meet location needs.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• OA1 Experience: 0-2 years of prior ophthalmic assistant experience
• OAII Experience: 2+ years of prior ophthalmic assistant experience

Responsibilities

• Reviews patient charts for completeness and accuracy.
• Records ocular and systemic history and visual acuity.
• Performs tests such as OCT, automated visual fields, photography, pachymetry, biometry.
• Conducts lensometry, automated refractometry, slit lamp exam with tonometry and angle assessment.
• Performs advanced ophthalmic procedures.
• Acts as scribe entering data into EMR or paper charts.
• Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications.
• Assists with informed consent and patient education; maintains office procedures.
• Oversees patient flow and maintains exam room cleanliness.
• Complies with all regulations and reports potential errors to supervisor.
