Job summary

Speare Memorial Hospital is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant for White Mountain Eye Care in Plymouth, NH. The role involves pre-visit planning, performing tests (Optomap, OCT, Visual Field, photography) and assisting providers.

You may dispense contact lens trials and train patients in lens insertion/removal, while coordinating with physicians for surgeries. The ideal candidate has health-care experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to adapt to changing patient needs.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Clinical experience in a health care setting.

Responsibilities

  • Independently plans ophthalmologic care for each patient prior to physician exam.
  • Performs necessary tests (Optomap, OCT, Visual Field, Photography).

  • Schedule surgeries as indicated by physician.

What You’ll Do
  • Individualizes the ophthalmological planning of each patient prior to the patient seeing the physician by:
    • Performs needed test (Optomap, OCT, Visual Field, Photography, etc.)
    • Read all glasses prior to exam by physician
    • Dispense contact lens trials as directed by provider
    • Conducts contact lens insertion and removal training
    • Consulting with physician if needed
    • Schedule surgeries as physician indicates
    • Having knowledge and understanding of eye anatomy and physiology
    • Knowing the common complications of eye diseases
    • Triaging phone calls from patients to identify need for and timeliness of appointments
  • Prepares exam and testing rooms and all supplies/equipment to ensure environmental safety for patients and staff as demonstrated by:
    • Turn all equipment on and make sure it is in working order and report any unsafe working conditions to the appropriate person
    • Selecting the appropriate supplies and equipment
    • Verifying special procedures that need sterile techniques
    • Identifying principles and techniques of disinfecting, sterilization and environmental control
    • Assist in efficient room turnover
  • Demonstrates competency of assigned functions and application of basic and current knowledge by:
    • Anticipates the needs of the provider and patient
    • Identifies testing needed and performs the appropriate testing
    • Knowing how to use all testing devices and supplies needed for using the equipment
    • Maintaining a neat and clean environment for all procedures and patient exam rooms
    • Differentiate between clean, contaminated and sterile areas
  • Attends and participates in hospital/departmental meetings as required.
  • Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to the job.
  • Demonstrates hospital’s stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co‑workers, patients, families and visitors.
  • Actively and appropriately participates in problem‑solving identification and resolution, both intra- and inter‑departmentally.
  • Meets department customer service standards and strives to enhance the level of customer service provided.
Qualifications

  • High School
  • Clinical experience in a health care setting
  • Ability to respond appropriately to changing patient and staffing needs. Demonstrated ability to make independent judgments in times of need along with the ability to seek guidance and/or support from appropriate resources
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to give and accept feedback in a constructive manner
Preferred
  • Previous experience in an ophthalmology practice or other health care setting
  • JCAHPO certified
