Job Summary

The successful Ophthalmic Medical Assistant / Technician is an essential team member of the clinic staff, delivering high-quality, patient-centered eye care by supporting physicians and optometrists in both clinical and operational functions. This position is responsible for obtaining and accurately documenting detailed patient histories, performing a wide range of ophthalmic tests, and assisting in comprehensive patient evaluations.

Key duties include conducting preliminary and diagnostic assessments such as visual acuity and visual field testing, auto‑refraction and refraction, pupil evaluation, extraocular motility, tonometry, and eye drop instillation. The role involves preparing patients for examinations, maintaining exam rooms and equipment, and ensuring accurate and timely medical record documentation.

The Ophthalmic Medical Assistant / Technician is critical in supporting workflow efficiency and clinic operations, contributing to a well‑organized environment and a seamless, positive patient experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Promptly and professionally assist the doctor in patient care.
  • Efficiently and accurately interview patients and document histories.
  • Perform technical workups, patient interviews and special testing.
  • Communicate with patients regarding follow‑up care, surgeries, procedures, changes in schedule, symptoms, surgery scheduling, etc.
  • Cooperate and communicate with all staff members and physicians about patient matters.
  • Accurately perform routine ophthalmic diagnostic testing.
  • Maintain and clean all equipment and lanes after use, including sterilization of equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of clinical supplies and restock exam rooms.
  • Return phone calls to patients, pharmacies.
  • Display consistent organization, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate an energetic, positive and empathetic personality.
  • Consistently display professionalism, congeniality and integrity to patients and coworkers. Communicate well with patients, co‑workers and physicians in a manner that instills understanding, confidence and trust.
