Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and safety‑conscious Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team specializing in wet utilities pipeline construction. The ideal candidate will have experience operating a variety of heavy machinery used in excavation, trenching, and pipe installation for water, sewer, and storm drain systems. This role requires precision, attention to safety, and the ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced construction environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, loaders, trenchers, and skid steers to support pipeline installation and utility work.
• Excavate trenches to specified depths and grades for water, sewer, and storm drain systems.
• Safely maneuver equipment around active job sites, maintaining awareness of surroundings and personnel.
• Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance of equipment to ensure optimal performance.
• Collaborate with site supervisors and crew members to execute project plans efficiently.
• Follow all safety protocols and OSHA regulations to maintain a safe work environment.
• Assist with manual labor tasks when equipment operation is not required.
• Document daily activities and equipment usage as needed.
• Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment at job sites.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Ensure work is performed to meet or exceed quality standards, including proper pipe alignment, bedding, and compaction.
• Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations.
• Participate in daily safety meetings and hazard assessments.
• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently.
• Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

• Minimum of 2–3 years of experience operating heavy equipment in utility or pipeline construction.
• Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Strong understanding of trench safety, shoring, and sloping requirements.
• Knowledge of construction math skills, including how to convert quantities, take measurements, and solve basic equations.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and grade stakes.
• Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred.
• Certification in heavy equipment operation (NCCER or equivalent) is a plus.

Physical Requirements

• Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
• Physically demanding tasks that include walking, kneeling, twisting, crawling, crouching, climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods.
• May require early morning, evening, overtime or weekend work depending on project needs.
• Must be able to push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
• Be physically qualified for lifting and moving heavy items, agile and capable of walking over rough, uneven terrain etc.

The hourly base rate for this position is between $40.09 - $67.29 per hour.

• This range is indicative of projected hiring range, however base hourly rate will be determined based on a candidate’s work location, skills and experience.
