Paulus Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Foreman to oversee daily field operations for water, sewer, and storm drain pipe projects. You will manage crews, coordinate equipment and materials, and ensure work is performed safely, on schedule, and to spec.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience in underground wet utilities, strong leadership, and a commitment to safety and quality in dynamic outdoor environments.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in underground wet utility construction, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and equipment used in pipeline installation.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA/CALOSHA safety policies and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead crews in the installation of underground utilities (water, sewer, storm drain).
  • Interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications to ensure accurate execution of work.
  • Coordinate with project managers, inspectors, and subcontractors to maintain workflow and resolve issues.
  • Track labor, equipment, and material usage daily; report progress and issues to management.
  • Ensure quality control and adherence to project timelines and budgets.
  • Train and mentor crew members to promote skill development and teamwork.
  • Initiate investigations of incidents and partner with the Operations Manager to implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure all personnel are informed about new procedures, equipment, or hazards introduced to the workplace.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to ensure adherence to OSHA/CALOSHA and company safety standards.
  • Encourage reporting of unsafe conditions and foster a no-retaliation environment.
  • Participate in safety committee meetings and contribute to strategic safety planning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

The Foreman plays a critical leadership role in overseeing the daily field operations of wet utilities pipeline construction projects, including water, sewer, and storm drain systems. This position is responsible for managing crews, coordinating equipment and materials, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans and regulatory standards. The Foreman interprets blueprints, monitors progress, resolves on-site issues, and maintains clear communication with project managers, inspectors, and subcontractors. A successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical knowledge of underground utilities, proven leadership skills, and a commitment to safety and quality. This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to lead teams in dynamic outdoor environments.

Physical Requirements
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to operate and work around heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Physically demanding tasks that include walking, kneeling, twisting, crawling, crouching, climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • May require early morning, evening, or weekend work depending on project needs.
  • Must be able to push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Be physically qualified for lifting and moving heavy items, agile and capable of walking over rough, uneven terrain etc.

The hourly base rate for this position is between $42.09 to $69.29 per hour.

  • This range is indicative of projected hiring range, however base hourly rate will be determined based on a candidate’s work location, skills and experience.
