Job description

The University of Virginia Library invites applications for the Operations Manager for the Robertson Media Center. This positionwill oversee the daily operations of the Robertson Media Center, ensuring that the spaces and services in the RMC respond to the educational technology needs of our students and faculty.The successful candidate will hire, train, and supervise student staff; provide consultations and instruction in the use of the equipment, the studios, and the software; collaborate with colleagues to repair hardware, install software, andmaintainlicenses; maintain a functional inventory of circulating media equipment; maintain the creation spaces; and, provide orientations, outreach, and tours; support events.

The Operations Manager is a member of the Teaching and Learning Department which strives to deepen the library's connections and partnerships with faculty, students, and other centers on campus.This position will join with a team of experts who support and promote excellence in research, scholarship,andteaching and learning for all members of the academicand Charlottesvillecommunity.The University of Virginia Library is committed to the values of respect, integrity, collaboration, and innovation.

Responsibilities
Operational Oversight (30%)
  • Work collaboratively with supervisor and professionals working in the space to define policies and workflows for public service in the Robertson Media Center, focusing on the studios and computer labs, the equipment circulation desk, and the on-site creative production technologies, ensuring excellent service to our faculty and students.
  • Work with supervisor to connect RMC services appropriately to other Library departments, ensuring that knowledgeable and appropriate referrals are made by RMC student staff.
  • Maintain the floor and the circulation desk in a functional and neat and orderly manner.
Student Supervision (30%)
  • Hire, train, schedule and supervise student employees, ensuring that expectations are clear; staff have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities; performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur constructive feedback is provided as appropriate; and, the requirements of performance planning, timekeeping and evaluation are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation.
Instruction and Consultation (20%)
  • In a consultative capacity, provide helpful media service to students and faculty by understanding user needs and demonstrating or assisting with hardware and software tools.
  • In a teaching capacity, work with Library teaching professionals to design and provide instruction in the use of the circulating and fixed systems and equipment.
  • Maintain the online departmental repository of information and documentation pertaining to staff, processes, procedures, and guidelines.
Technical Support (20%)
  • Collaborate with Library technical professionals to diagnose and repair hardware and software problems.
  • Collaborate with the Library's technical professionals to install software and maintain licenses.
  • Maintain a functional inventory of circulating media equipment, repairing or replacing items as necessary, or collaborating to do so.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience:3+ years of relevant professional experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, operate, and troubleshootcreative technologies, equipment, and studio systems.
  • Experience with media production tools, equipment, and workflows in areas such as video, audio, photography, and/or 3D modeling and printing
  • Experience working with the public or in a customer service position
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear manner
  • Demonstrated teaching experience
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience supervising student workers

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Salary Range
  • The anticipated hiring range is $65,000 - $75,000, commensurate with education and experience.
