Job summary

Carpenter Technology Corporation seeks an Assistant Department Manager to support frontline supervisors across multiple shifts, ensuring safe, efficient daily operations and alignment with quality and safety goals.

The role leads production supervisors, mentors staff, develops training materials, manages schedules and budgets, and helps implement TPM, FMEA, and continuous improvement initiatives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; bachelor’s preferred.
• 8+ years in manufacturing supervisory or management roles with multiple direct reports.
• Experience managing production schedules, manpower planning, and process-flow coordination across departments.
• Knowledge of manufacturing systems, material flow, quality systems, and process control techniques.
• Proven ability to lead small project teams and create performance reports and analyses.
• Experience developing training material and mentoring operators.

Responsibilities

• Support manufacturing operations aligned with organizational goals.
• Lead and guide Production Supervisors; evaluate performance and train staff.
• Mentor Manufacturing Support Specialists; develop process/operator training materials.
• Conduct RMR and SPC analysis.
• Attend department and facility production meetings.
• Develop and manage weekly operations and manpower schedules (vacation/overtime).
• Maintain knowledge of manufacturing systems, material flow, quality systems, and process control.
• Monitor work center performance; identify issues and implement corrective actions.
• Create and review production schedules; ensure material flow and line-ups.
• Collect and process production records; coordinate interdepartmental flows.
• Lead small projects; produce reports/charts/graphs with actionable recommendations.
• Evaluate new equipment, processes, and maintenance technologies.
• Oversee budgeting and purchasing of consumables; drive cost-reduction initiatives.
• Develop SOPs and FMEA documents.
• Implement scheduling rates and TPM plans; manage downtime and preventive maintenance.
• Act as Department Manager when required.
• Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
