Job summary

Xcel Energy offers a long-term internship in the OT Support organization, focusing on EMS and NERC CIP compliance. The intern will gain exposure to documentation, evidence gathering, and support for the EMS team over 18 months, with a May 24, 2027 start and hybrid in-person requirements.

Eligible students are pursuing electrical engineering, computer science, MIS, drafting or electric design, with the ability to commit to 20–40 hours weekly depending on school schedule.

  • Support construction projects to integrate new field devices into the SCADA system.
  • Assist with graphical user interfaces to support transmission operations.
  • Help with internal processes and documentation.
  • Work with data analytics and assist in troubleshooting issues.

Xcel Energy has an opportunity for a long-term internship within the Operation Technology (OT) Support organization. This unique internship will offer access to work with the AD-Ops Delivery – Energy Management System (Xcel- EMS Team). The successful candidate will gain insight and exposure to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC)- Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Compliance requirements and be able to support with proper documentation as well as evidence gathering. Over the course of 18 months (20-40 hours weekly), the intern will learn and work on specific requirements within the EMS Team.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Support construction projects to incorporate new field devices into current SCADA system

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Current student, Sophomore or higher
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, computer information systems, management information systems, drafting, electric design
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Great MS office skills, such as Word, Excel.
  • Programing skills, Java, C+, Python
  • Some use of the graphical tools such as AutoCAD or MicroStation
  • Understanding of the electrical grids

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $18.90 to $22.10 per hour
