Job summary

First Coast YMCA is seeking an Operation Hero Mentor to implement and supervise the Operation Hero program for 8-15 school-age children. Hours are Monday to Friday, 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM, at our Jacksonville location, with a focus on guiding children through a 10-week course and providing homework assistance while maintaining a safe, organized space.

The role emphasizes strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and a commitment to community impact.

Qualifications

  • DCF 40 hours of training preferred.
  • One to two years related experience preferred.
  • Military affiliation ( Military Dependent, Veteran, Active Military, and etc.) preferred.
  • Minimum age requirements may apply; for example, minimum age of 21.
  • Fulfillment of state-specific hiring standards and completion of YMCA Program specific certifications.
  • Ability to develop, train and implement quality developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Ability to present a positive image for staff, participates, colleagues, supervisor and the community.
  • Flexible and willing to adapt to changing needs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and team-oriented.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Must pass Level 2 Background Screening.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and implement the Operation Hero tutorial and counseling program.
  • Provide assistance and maintain regular communication with the Program Coordinator.
  • Give leadership, direction, and supervision to assigned volunteers; maintain an open, friendly, professional relationship with staff, parents, volunteers and participants; treat everyone with dignity and respect, and allow for individual differences.
  • Review and be familiar with weekly lesson plans prior to implementation.
  • Maintain an organized, safe and clean program space. Maintain program supplies.
  • Complete all required documentation, to include, not be limited to: attendance reports, weekly reports, supply requests, accident/incident reports, behavior log reports, and lesson plans.
  • Respond to all suggestions/complaints in writing within 24 hours of receipt.
  • Distribute and collect all participant/parent/counselor questionnaires/surveys.
  • Must attend all staff meetings and in-service training programs.
  • May be required to work hours outside normal work schedule for training, extended program hours, or association events.
  • Ensures all First Coast YMCA standards and best practices are implemented and followed.
