Job summary

UPMC is seeking an OR Surgical Specialist who will function as a Registered Nurse in the Operating Room, providing leadership and collaborative care with physicians and the care team. The role includes supporting the Abdominal Liver Transplant Service Line, and working on complex surgical procedures with emphasis on patient outcomes and staff development.

Qualifications

• Applies nursing process within Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment and to translate patient condition to the care team.
• Demonstrates strong communication, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making in the OR setting.
• Supports education and training of new staff, students, and graduates to service line.
• Leads unit teams and participates in governance and quality initiatives to improve patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Acts as a unit leader in clinical expertise, teaching, and as a resource nurse.
• Promotes evidence-based practice to improve patient care and unit environment.
• Identifies opportunities for quality improvement and cost management.
• Leads and participates in service line teams and VAT processes.
• Ensures proper service line equipment, supplies, and vendor access within OR.
• Performs charge nurse role and runs service line in the absence of the clinician.
• Participates in education and training of new staff and evaluates core service line staff.
