APi Group is hiring a high-impact, business-facing role that will serve as the primary legal partner to the Group President and the leadership teams of Davis-Ulmer, Viking Fire Protection Group, and USA Fire—a group of fire and life safety companies with annual revenues over $1 Billion. This role is located Onsite in New Brighton, MN.
The Operating Company General Counsel will shape business strategy and decision-making through practical, commercially minded counsel across legal, regulatory, compliance, risk, commercial, employment, and governance matters.
The role will identify and manage legal and business risks, enable responsible growth, and serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership. The Operating Company General Counsel will also lead and evolve a scalable legal operating model, leveraging APi's global legal capabilities, outside counsel, technology, and AI to deliver efficient, high-value legal support.
This is not a purely reactive legal role – we are looking for a lawyer who leans in, thinks commercially, and helps the business achieve its goals. Additionally, you will be part of APi’s Global Legal Team and be expected to collaborate, share best practices, and proactively engage with our global legal team.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Business Partnership & Risk Mitigation
- Serve as the primary legal and strategic advisor to the Group President and operating-company leadership teams, participating in business planning, strategy, and key leadership decisions.
- Identify and manage legal, regulatory, operational, and enterprise risks while enabling the business to pursue its strategic objectives.
- Train leaders in key areas of construction law, fire and life safety system regulations, contract law, labor and employment, health and safety, intellectual property, immigration, and data privacy.
- Oversee significant litigation, claims, disputes, arbitration, insurance, and related risk matters in partnership with APi's risk team and outside counsel.
- Partner with business leaders and safety professionals to embed safety considerations into legal guidance, risk management, operational decision-making, and leadership accountability.
- Build trusted relationships across the organization.
Commercial, Growth & Transactions
- Lead legal support for significant commercial activities, including customer, vendor, subcontract, procurement, and supply-chain matters.
- Negotiate or oversee high-value, complex, and strategically important agreements.
- Build scalable contracting processes, playbooks, templates, and tiered review protocols that enable efficient business execution while maintaining appropriate legal oversight.
- Support M&A and integration activities in partnership with APi's corporate legal team.
- Leverage technology and AI to improve contracting and legal-service delivery.
Regulatory, Compliance & Employment
- Own the legal and regulatory compliance program and champion APi's ethics and Code of Conduct culture across the operating businesses.
- Lead government and regulatory matters, including federal contractor compliance and interactions with agencies and public-sector stakeholders.
- Advise on U.S. employment and labor matters, including investigations, accommodations, labor relations, and collective bargaining.
- Oversee privacy, data protection, and related data-governance matters.
- Partner with APi's enterprise legal and compliance functions to align programs, policies, and best practices.
Governance, Legal Function Leadership & Transformation
- Lead on all aspects of corporate governance and entity management for the operating companies within the Group.
- Lead and develop the legal function, setting priorities, allocating resources, and ensuring delivery of timely, practical legal support.
- Build a scalable legal operating model balancing internal resources, APi's global capabilities, technology, and outside counsel.
- Manage outside counsel, legal budgets, matter management, and legal operations for quality, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.
- Drive continuous improvement, including adoption of technology and AI, process standardization, and tools that enable efficient management of routine legal matters.
- Develop legal and compliance capabilities across the business through training, guidance, and collaboration with APi's Global Legal Team.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a reputable law school and in good standing with the bar association.
- 10+ years of legal experience in private practice, in-house at a large corporation, or in a government agency.
- Extensive experience in relevant legal practice areas, including commercial and government contracts, government relations, compliance, litigation, and enterprise risk and governance, ideally within highly regulated or safety-critical operating environments.
- Deep understanding of business operations and the ability to translate legal complexities into actionable business advice; experience with government contracting, federal contractor compliance obligations, or working with government agencies and regulators is a plus.
- Strong leadership and communication skills to effectively manage a legal team, oversee a significant litigation portfolio, and advise senior executives and governing boards.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to identify legal risks and develop appropriate solutions.

Benefits and Compensation
This role is based in our New Brighton, MN office. The salary range for this position is $172,300-$258,500 depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for annual bonus and profit sharing based on individual and company performance.
