Job summary

University of California, Berkeley seeks an experienced Research Software Engineer to advance agentic AI and open source software for scientific research. You will collaborate with senior researchers and industry partners to design, implement, and evaluate AI-enabled workflows and open source tools across interdisciplinary teams.

Strong Python programming, LLM tooling, and experience with open source practices are required.

Qualifications

• Advanced programming skills including Python expertise.
• Fluency with agentic AI and LLM coding agents ( Claude / Codex ).
• Experience building software, tooling, or infrastructure for agentic AI / LLM systems.
• Git-based version control, testing, and CI/CD with GitHub Actions, plus secure software practices.
• Experience reviewing code via open discussions and PRs for distributed projects.
• A curious mindset with ability to deliver from interdisciplinary teams.
• Strong skills in software specification, design, and deployment at scale.
• Excellent project leadership and management abilities.
• Strong communication of technical concepts to varied audiences.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of complex interface, software, and infrastructure for agentic AI workflows.
• Contribute to and support open source projects and collaborative communities.
• Develop project plans within interdisciplinary teams and communicate progress.
• Analyze existing open source software and develop modular, extensible systems.
• Enable data analyses and workflows across multimodal pipelines with researchers.
• Prepare and obtain approvals for user and developer documentation; set standards.
• Stay current with AI research, security, and accessibility practices.
• Serve as technical lead for one or two software projects of moderate to broad scope.
• Advance UC Berkeley OSPO initiatives and open source impact.
