Job summary

Intuitive Surgical is seeking a Reinforcement Learning Intern to contribute to the development and evaluation of RL algorithms for supervised autonomy on onsite internship in Sunnyvale, California. The intern will collect data from the surgical robot, train RL models, and benchmark performance using established metrics.

The role requires current enrollment in an Engineering/Robotics/CS program at the Doctorate level, with a 10–12 week, full-time commitment starting May or June.

Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled in and returning to an accredited degree-seeking program.
• 10-12 week internship starting May or June; full-time (~40 hours/week).

Responsibilities

• Collect tele-operated simulation and/or real data from the surgical robot.
• Train RL algorithms on trajectory data and benchmark performance.
• Adapt RL algorithms to surgical domain and identify techniques for improving performance.
• Recommend a suggested algorithm/experimental setup beyond the internship and present findings.
• Deploy chosen RL algorithm in simulation or real-time on the robot to validate performance.
