Job summary

Shrub Oak International School (SOIS) is seeking a qualified ASL Interpreter to join our on-site team at our Northern Westchester County campus. The role focuses on providing accurate sign language interpretation and supporting communication for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students within an autism-focused educational environment.

The position requires at least a Bachelor's degree, RID or EIPA credentials, and 1 year of interpreting experience in a school setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• RID written test or EIPA score of 3.5+ preferred.
• Minimum 1 year interpreting experience with deaf/HoH population; preferably in a K-12 setting.
• Valid driver’s license; ability to transport students if required.
• Interpreter training program completion preferred; relevant experience considered.

Responsibilities

• Follow RID Code of Professional Conduct and EIPA Guidelines in decision-making.
• Provide accessible communication and interpreting services in academic settings, meetings, and events.
• Serve as a sign language model and present content at an accessible language level.
• Provide tutoring support including vocabulary previews and guided practice for D/HH and DeafDisabled students.
• Coordinate with transdisciplinary team and participate in IEP/CSE meetings and related sessions.
• Prepare thoroughly for interpreting assignments with materials and collaboration.
• Prioritize educational interpreting while maintaining confidentiality; ensure student safety.
• Set up and support materials, equipment, and emergency protocols as directed.
• Contribute to school safety, productivity, and operations during work hours.
• Assist in social development by teaching conversational signs to staff and peers.
• Build strong relationships across departments and support crisis intervention when needed.
