Responsibilities

• Uses standards of medical-surgical nursing practice to increase the quality of care and quality of life for the patient, family, and significant other(s) by evaluating nursing practice.
• Establishes effective relationships and serves as an advocate with the patient, family, and significant other(s) to facilitate the care plan.
• Uses the nursing process to develop and implement the plan of care, collect assessment data, determine diagnoses, outcomes, and interventions.
• Develops assessment and management strategies considering physical, cultural, social, economic, developmental, spiritual, and vocational factors.
• Demonstrates knowledge of illness impact on patient and family status.
• Utilizes leadership to coordinate with patient, family, and inter-professional team in planning and evaluating care.
• Communicates to support collaborative decision making reflecting ethical and holistic care within resources.
• Educates patient and family about measures to promote health or comfort.
• Mentors nursing staff and students to foster a positive work environment.
• Applies evidence-based practice to nursing care for age- and department-specific needs.
