Qualifications

• Completion of a diploma, associate, or baccalaureate degree in nursing.
• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Tennessee.
• BLS certification within orientation period.
• ACLS & PALS is preferred; NRP within one year of employment.
• Additional certifications may be required at department’s discretion.
• Three month probationary period for policies and skills assessment.

Responsibilities

• Performs initial patient assessment using the nursing process and age-specific needs; prescribes and updates plan of care.
• Documents initial assessment and delivery of patient care in the medical record.
• Coordinates bedside care and assists/delegates with skilled procedures.
• Administers or supervises medications, IV fluids, blood, and blood products.
• Informs physician of patient status and assists with treatments and rounds.
• Supervises patient care, assigns by acuity and staff competency.
• Prioritizes physician’s orders and ensures proper execution.
• Communicates with patient and family; coordinates discharge planning.
• Checks emergency equipment and drugs on unit each shift.
• Acts as primary caregiver or charge nurse when assigned.
• Supports orientation of new personnel and serves as role model.
• Relays information to ambulance, law enforcement, and community partners per policy.
• Ensures safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
