Job summary

Rush University Medical Center is seeking a dedicated Patient Care Technician to support the RN in delivering high-quality patient care in a 14 East Tower unit. Responsibilities include documenting care, assisting with procedures, and maintaining patient safety in a fast-paced environment.

Day shift, 36 hours/week (0.9 FTE) with 12-hour shifts and weekends included. Pay range $20.00–$24.75 per hour, with comprehensive benefits according to Rush policies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Maintain current BLS certification.
• Formal clinical training (CMA, CNA, PCT, EMT, corpsman, paramedic, nursing or medical student experience).
• Successful completion of the institutional screening examination.
• Ability to solve simple problems.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

• Assists the RN in the delivery of patient care.
• Reports to charge RN or designate for assignment of duties.
• Maintains a safe patient environment.
• Sets priority of duties based on patient and unit needs under RN direction.
• Participates in individualized plans of care under the RN.
• Assists patients in activities of daily living.
• Documents care accurately in patient records.
• Performs routine procedures, treatments and specimen collections.
• Demonstrates aseptic technique when necessary.
• Assists RN or physician with advanced procedures.
• Assists with management of uncomplicated tubes and drains.
• Performs blood glucose testing, specimen collection, etc.
• Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific variables.
• Immediately reports changes in patient condition to the RN.
• Transports patients and items as needed.
• Assists with admission, discharge, and transport of patients.
• Transports laboratory specimens and patient belongings as required.
• Obtains blood products, supplies and equipment as necessary.
• Competently utilizes technology.
• Demonstrates proficiency with telephone/patient call systems and EPIC.
• Documents in real time at the point of care.
• Demonstrates proficiency with unit monitors, pumps, and equipment.
• Maintains a safe and orderly environment.
• Restocks according to unit specifications and maintains emergencies.
• Communicates pertinent information to team members and shift changes.
