Job summary

GrayMatter is seeking a Commissioning Manager to lead on-site commissioning for critical data center projects. You will oversee commissioning teams and coordinate with clients, contractors, and internal teams to ensure fully validated electrical, mechanical, and controls systems.

The role requires a degree in a technical field, 5+ years of commissioning experience, and the ability to travel to active data center sites. Strong leadership and safety focus are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Automation, or related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of commissioning, controls, automation, or related field experience.
• Direct experience commissioning data center infrastructure systems is required.
• Experience leading commissioning teams, technical crews, or field personnel in complex project environments.
• Strong understanding of electrical distribution systems, HVAC and mechanical systems, PLC controls, BMS, and EPMS platforms.
• Proven ability to coordinate with contractors, clients, project managers, and commissioning stakeholders.
• Strong troubleshooting, organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to travel and work on-site at active data center construction projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead all on-site commissioning activities from pre-functional testing through IST and final turnover.
• Direct and coordinate Site Leads, Commissioning Engineers, and Engineering Technicians.
• Serve as primary on-site commissioning representative for clients, contractors, subcontractors, and internal teams.
• Maintain commissioning schedules, milestones, resource planning, and risk mitigation.
• Provide technical leadership during startup, checkout, and testing activities.
• Oversee electrical system commissioning including switchgear, UPS, generators, ATS, PDUs, and RPPs.
• Manage mechanical system commissioning for chillers, cooling plants, pumps, CRAH/CRAC units, and HVAC controls.
• Support BMS, EPMS, PLC controls, and integrated networked systems validation.
• Ensure documentation of point-to-point verification, testing, deficiency tracking, and corrective actions.
• Promote safety compliance including OSHA, LOTO, JHA, and arc flash requirements.
• Review and approve commissioning documentation, test scripts, reports, and client deliverables.
• Mentor and develop commissioning engineers and technicians.
• Provide updates on progress, schedule, resources, and risks.
