Job summary

University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking a Locksmith I to install, maintain, and repair campus locks and associated hardware across multiple facilities. You will cut keys, repair desk and cabinet locks, and assist in maintaining the master key system on a busy university campus.

The role demands solid mechanical skills, blueprint interpretation, and good communication. This is an on-site position within the Facilities Services department, with supervision duties as needed and collaboration

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; advanced trade school certification preferred for locksmithing.
• Minimum 1 year experience with lock & key systems or door systems; 2 years with certified locksmith as apprentice or certification from training preferred.
• General mechanical knowledge; skilled with hand tools; ability to interpret plans/blueprints and hardware schedules; strong verbal and written communication.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain and repair various building locks (cylindrical, unit, mortise, rim) and reload cylinders.
• Cut new or replacement keys for authorized personnel.
• Repair locks on desks, file cabinets, display cases, and similar containers.
• Picks locks and makes emergency repairs under urgent conditions.
• Supervise part-time and full-time staff; maintain master key systems and logs.
• Assist with renovations by determining locking requirements from blueprints and overseeing installation.
