Job summary

Syracuse University seeks a VA School Certifying Official to assist students and families with education benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, coordinating between students, the university, and the VA.

The role involves preparing and certifying VA eligibility, reporting changes, and ensuring compliance across all student files. The position reports to the Director of the Office of Veteran Success and requires on-site presence, with limited remote arrangements per university

Qualifications

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Effective time management, organization and planning skills.
• Knowledge of current existing and proposed VA Educational benefits regulations and policies.

Responsibilities

• Counsels students and parents regarding eligibility, benefits, and financial procedures for veterans and/or dependents.
• Prepares and certifies VA enrollment certifications and certifies students in accordance with the Yellow Ribbon program.
• Verifies student educational benefits.
• Ensures compliance with university, state, VA and other federal regulations.
• Serves as the VA liaison for the university.
• Monitors course loads and grades to ensure VA compliance.
• Reports status changes affecting eligibility; assists students with VA issues.
• Liaises with university departments on VA education benefits impact.
• Prepares reports and analyzes data.
• Audits student files at start and during each semester and at graduation.
• Assists veterans with interpreting and disseminating VA regulations; participates in veteran events.
