Job summary

American University is seeking a Building Maintenance Helper to support safe, functional, and attractive living and learning environments on campus in Washington, DC. The role involves minor maintenance, inspections, and coordination with facilities teams to keep HVAC and mechanical systems running smoothly.

Responsibilities include assisting with installations, performing repairs on air handling units, and ensuring safety by addressing leaks and clogs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1-3 years of relevant experience.
• Knowledge of Basic Safety Practices.
• Basic knowledge of plumbing and HVAC systems.
• Intro to Building Maintenance course preferred.
• 1-2 years experience as a Helper/Maintainer in related tasks.

Responsibilities

• Assist with installation and maintenance of mechanical or HVAC equipment to maintain safe operation.
• Perform minor repairs on air handling units, pumps, VAVs, DX units, and related equipment.
• Address safety issues such as leaks or clogs to ensure safe operation.
• Provide access and escort for contractors and others as needed.
• Inspect buildings and equipment; maintain accurate records for deferred maintenance analysis.
