JOB SUMMARY

The terms standardized patient, simulated patient, and simulated participant (SP) may be used interchangeably and refer to a person trained to realistically portray a patient, client, family member or health care professional for training pre-licensure nursing students. An SP is an individual who has been coached to recreate the personality, medical history, physical findings, and emotional structure and communication style of an individual accurately and consistently at a specific point in time/treatment. SPs do not disclose their own personal medical history, they will answer questions based on the details of the simulated case that is provided.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Nursing Simulation Education and the direction of the Simulation Education Specialist, and/or Susan S. Morrison School of Nursing faculty, the SP provides the opportunity for nursing students to develop, practice, and enhance therapeutic communication, interviewing, physical examination, and non-invasive technical skills. The basic responsibility of a SP is to simulate medical scenarios or cases with learners in experiential education and assessment contexts.
