Job summary

The Office of the Coroner in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania seeks a Full-time Board Certified Forensic Pathologist to examine traumatic, sudden and unexplained deaths in the public interest. The pathologist will perform autopsies, document findings, and offer court testimony to outside agencies, including law enforcement, while remaining on-call and available to respond to inquiries from home.

Qualifications

• Must be licensed to practice medicine in Pennsylvania.
• Board certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and forensic pathology.
• Three years' experience in a Coroner or Medical Examiner’s Office is preferred.
• Knowledge of anatomy, pathology, anthropology and firearms for identification and investigation.
• Familiar with rules of evidence and court procedures.
• Must have a valid PA driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Performs autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death and documents written reports.
• Examines body structures and internal organs to trace the cause of death.
• Reviews hospital charts, deputy coroner reports, law enforcement reports and postmortem results.
• Directs the determination and certification of causes of death.
• Directs the preservation of the chain of evidence.
• Provides expert testimony in depositions, grand jury sessions and trials.
• Maintains knowledge of regulatory developments affecting the office.
• Develops fellowship training and provides education in forensic disciplines.
• Assists and consults with external agencies and regional disaster preparedness.
