Job summary

The Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission is seeking a detail‑oriented Office Associate to support the Director and professional staff. The role requires excellent organization, strong communication, and the ability to interact effectively with a diverse group, including deaf or hard of hearing individuals.

Responsibilities include clerical duties, invoice reviews, receptionist work, and coordinating office supplies while using sign language as needed.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school education and two years of office experience.
  • Must be able to keyboard accurately at 35 words per minute.
  • Sign American Sign Language at a colloquial level when assisting non-English speakers.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as Secretary to the Director and staff.
  • Reviews invoices for interpreters, commissioners, and licensure boards.
  • Performs a range of complex, specialized clerical tasks.
  • Acts as receptionist in the agency’s executive office.
  • Communicates with deaf and hard of hearing clients via sign language and other staff.

Position Overview

This position provides high‑level administrative and clerical support to the Director and professional staff. Essential Functions
  • Serves as Secretary to the Director and professional staff.

  • Performs a variety of complex, specialized clerical support functions.
  • Serves as receptionist in the agency’s executive office.
  • Identifiesneeds for office supplies.
  • Through sign language, communicates with those who are deaf and hard of hearing and others. Including clients, government officials, staff, and others.
  • Performs other duties asrequiredand assigned which arereasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge,skilland mental development equivalent to completion of high school and two years of office experience.
  • Requires ability to keyboard accurately at 35 words per minute.
  • In addition to having a written and spoken knowledge of the English language, candidatesare required tosign American Sign Language at a colloquial skill level in carrying out position duties in conjunction with non-English speaking individuals.
Conditions of Employment
