The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Office Assistant 1 position at the Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) in Mackenzie Point, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:

Under the supervision of the Mailroom Staff Sergeant, the primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Sort, x-ray, inspect, scan, and deliver mail for up to 1,500 inmates and 350 staff in accordance with State of Alaska Department of Corrections policy and procedure.
  • Receive outgoing mail from staff and inmates, determine most cost-effective method for shipping option, affix appropriate postage.
  • Maintain log for all incoming and outgoing mail, postage meter, and input inmate postage charges to the inmate accounts.
  • Log and track postage meter balance. Contact Administrative Officer in a timely manner to have funds added.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

Goose Creek Correctional Center is a minimum/medium custody facility that houses up to 1500 inmates and employs over 350 staff. You will be working in an office environment with other staff daily, with the potential of working around inmates.

High school diploma or G.E.D.;

OR

Acceptance in full standing by an accredited college (this includes acceptance in a concurrent enrollment or dual enrollment program);

OR

A Career Readiness Certificate with ACT WorkKeys® scores of skill level 3 or higher in: Graphic Literacy (formerly Locating Information), Applied Math, and Workplace Documents (formerly Reading for Information).

ACT WorkKeys® skill testing and career readiness certification is available at the Department of Labor and Workforce Development's Alaska Job Centers.

"Acceptance in full standing" means acceptance to a post-secondary program by a college or university and does not require enrollment or participation in the program. This includes acceptance in a program offering college credits while in high school, or both high school and college credits, but does not include taking advanced placement courses in high school.

Some positions in this class require the incumbent operate a State vehicle. Such positions require the selected candidate possess a valid driver's license and be 18 years of age or older on or before the first day of employment.

Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
