Job description

We are maintaining an open call for this full time, on-site, year-round occupational therapist position based in beautiful Juneau Alaska. Potential for periodic travel/outreach to other remote Southeast Alaska communities as assigned. While this outpatient clinic with primarily pediatric populations but serving clients of all ages is an onsite position, for our remote communities we combine telemedicine in between onsite visits for remote clients. Our unique hybrid model of intermittent onsite and ongoing telemedicine services has proven successful since 2018 for pediatric and adult populations throughout Southeast Alaska.

Individuals seeking this position require a high level of commitment to the philosophical foundation of the profession and the ability to demonstrate understanding of positionality and cultural factors that influence occupation and wellness. Mental Health is a strong focus of our practice and social justice is a guiding framework for how we operate. Coordination with other community-based agencies and case management tasks beyond a typical OT position is both expected and encouraged. Duties are primarily self-directed with support from existing team and include but are not limited to:

• frequent family support/consultations via email, text and care conferences
• design and fabrication of client-centered specialized adaptive equipment and upper extremity splints
• attendance at IEP or Care Coordination meetings and reporting to care coordination agencies in advocacy of additional community services where indicated
• intervention in home and community settings where indicated
• fluency with telemedicine service provision using Fusion following mentorship period
• trainings and in-services for local agencies (daycare, school districts, care providers, community partners) with a strong focus toward mental health outcomes and neurodiversity affirming practices

Given the high level of expectation for community supports and collaboration, productivity expectations are much lower than industry standard at 70% billable hours. Our therapists manage their own schedule unless they request support from main office, allowing for flexibility. Due to the high number of pediatric patients it is expected to run a clinic day on Saturdays to reduce school schedule disruptions, accommodate working parents and improve outcomes by avoiding neurodivergent burnout in our patients.

Travel assignments include $50 per diem allowance and paid time for weather related cancellations. Pay is dependent on timely completion of documentation. Annual payment of AOTA and AkOTA dues offered by employer as well as Rural Health Stipend toward health insurance or student loan repayment and Continuing Education allowance. Starting pay for OT $50/hour, OTA $30/hour, dependent on experience.

Requirements

• Candidates must demonstrate strong cultural competency and ethical reasoning skills
• Strong self-direction skills to manage schedule and maintain timely and accurate documentation using Fusion: No longer than 48 hours for daily notes and 72 hours for evaluations.
• Concise and tactful communication skills to support meaningful, professional and positive team communication
• Fluency with telemedicine service delivery following mentorship from team
• Splinting for pediatric and adult populations with CE supports available to establish service competency if required
• Excellent task analysis skills to support wide variety of all ages and conditions as often encountered in rural health settings
• Generalist occupational therapist skills with high comfort levels treating variety of pediatric conditions, adults with ASD, Serious Mental Illness, mild cognitive impairments and clients with Intellectual Disabilities using Evidence Based Practice
• Understanding of school based practice models and IDEA/504 legislation
• Understanding of and empathy for current and historical environmental factors impacting health outcomes such as social justice movements and pADL
• Current Alaska OT/OTA license and board certification from NBCOT required. Minimum Master's degree: Bachelor's with experience considered for OTR position
• COVID19 and other vaccinations maintained annually
• Ability to tolerate fast-paced schedule, intensive need clients, travel on small aircraft/ferries and frequent weather delays with positive attitude.
