Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program; RN license current in Iowa.
  • 3+ years nursing experience preferred, with occupational health or workers' compensation exposure.
  • BSN preferred; ACLS/BLS certifications as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, triage, and treat work-related injuries and illnesses within licensure and protocol.
  • Coordinate workers' compensation claims and return-to-work plans with teams.
  • Conduct medical surveillance programs, hearing tests, spirometry, and other screenings.
  • Maintain accurate medical records compliant with OSHA, HIPAA, and regulations.
  • Educate staff on injury prevention, safety, and wellness initiatives.
  • Collaborate with physicians, HR, and safety to facilitate timely care.

The Occupational Health Nurse provides direct clinical care and occupational health services for team members, promoting a safe and healthy work environment. This position is responsible for the assessment and management of occupational injuries and illnesses, workers' compensation administration, medical surveillance programs, and return-to-work coordination. The Occupational Health Nurse collaborates closely with providers, safety professionals, leaders, and On-Site Employer Human Resources to support team member health, regulatory compliance, and workplace safety.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to providing exceptional team member care while fostering a culture of safety, professionalism, and service.
  • Assess, triage, and treat occupational injuries and illnesses within the scope of licensure and organizational protocols.
  • Investigate workplace injuries, manage workers' compensation claims, maintain case documentation, and coordinate communications with team members, supervisors, providers, insurance carriers, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor care plans for work-related injuries and illnesses, including appropriate follow-up and referral coordination.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare providers to facilitate timely treatment and recovery.
  • Coordinate modified duty assignments and return-to-work plans in partnership with leaders, Human Resources, and safety personnel.
  • Administer medications, first aid, treatments, immunizations, and other nursing interventions as authorized.
  • Respond to workplace medical emergencies and provide care within the legal scope of nursing practice.
  • Conduct medical surveillance and regulatory health programs, including hearing conservation testing, spirometry, vision screening, respiratory protection evaluations, drug testing, and breath alcohol testing.
  • Perform post-offer employment assessments and support fitness-for-duty evaluations as required.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and written medical records in accordance with OSHA, HIPAA, workers' compensation, and organizational requirements.
  • Assist with OSHA recordkeeping, reporting, injury trend analysis, and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Conduct workplace evaluations and collaborate on identifying health and safety risks, recommending corrective actions when appropriate.
  • Educate team members on injury prevention, health promotion, workplace safety, and wellness initiatives.
  • Prepare reports and maintain documentation necessary to support occupational health operations and compliance requirements.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program required.
  • Current Iowa Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience preferred.
  • Experience in occupational health, emergency nursing, urgent care, ambulatory care, workers' compensation, or case management preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Occupational Health Nursing, Emergency Nursing, or Case Management certification preferred.
  • Hearing Conservation, Spirometry, DOT Drug Testing, and Breath Alcohol Technician certifications preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of occupational health practices, workplace safety principles, and OSHA regulations.
  • Understanding of workers' compensation processes and return-to-work coordination.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidential medical information and exercise sound judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with team member s, providers, leaders, Human Resources, and external partners.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and occupational health documentation systems.
Travel
  • Occasional local travel may be required. Up to 10% travel may be necessary to support occupational health operations and training activities.
