Job summary

PeaceHealth is seeking an experienced OB Surgical Technologist to join the Labor & Delivery team at St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham, WA.

This part-time role (0.6 FTE) supports the obstetrical surgical team in a 10-bed Labor & Delivery unit with two OR suites, working 7am to 7:30pm. Responsibilities include establishing sterile technique, assisting in vaginal births, and maintaining supplies; a current Surgical Technology program completion and WA registration are required, with BLS

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program or recognized course of training as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a Surgical Technologist, prior obstetrical/gynecologic exposure preferred.
  • Knowledge of age-specific growth and development and life stages to meet patient needs.
  • Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration.
  • Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support Certification.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Arrange and inventory sterile set-up for operation and pass items as needed to the surgical team.
  • Maintain sterile field and ensure aseptic technique throughout the procedure.
  • Assist in patient preparation and movement.
  • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instrumentation; assist with room turnover.
  • Assist in vaginal births as part of obstetrical team support.
  • Access electronic records and preference lists as needed.
  • Maintain unit supplies and inventory control to meet patient care needs.
  • Participate in safety initiatives and SCIP/SCOAP programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Position: Part time, 0.6 FTE Day shiftOB Surgical Technologist
  • Schedule:7am - 7:30pm
  • Unit: 10-bed Labor & Delivery unit with 2 OR suites
  • Hospital: St. Joseph Medical Center, 253-bed acute care hospital with level II trauma center

Position Details

This position is responsible for assisting the Surgical team during operative procedures by performing a variety of technical duties to primarily assist in responsibility for the preparation and maintenance of the surgical sterile field for the obstetrical operative patient and/or her infant.

Essential Functions
  • Arrange and inventories sterile set-up for operation and passes items as needed to the surgical team.
  • Understand and apply the principles of asepsis. Establish and maintain sterile field and assure team maintains sterile environment.
  • Assist in preparation and moving of patients.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes instrumentation. Assists with clean-up and room turnover.
  • Assists in vaginal births
  • Access computer information as needed, such as preference lists and digital images.
  • Maintain unit supplies by requisitioning and receiving supplies then stocking patient rooms and supply areas to meet patient care needs. Inventory control.
  • Participates in all safety initiatives. Adheres to programs such as SCIP and SCOAP quality initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Requires: Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program or recognized course of training as a Surgical Technologist
  • Requires: Minimum of 1 year experience as a Surgical Technologist, prefer experience with obstetrical and gynecologic surgeries
  • Required: Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply age specific principles of growth and development and life stages to meet each patient’s needs
  • Required: Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration
  • Required: Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support Certification
  • Preferred: Certified Surgical Technologist

Working Conditions
Lifting
  • Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).
  • Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment and perform precise procedures.
  • Ability to move around area with occasional sitting.
  • Frequent reaching/ bending/ squatting/ kneeling/ grasping.
  • Lift/Carry: Frequently up to 15 lbs. Occasionally up to 20 lbs.
  • Push/Pull: Frequently up to 20 lbs. force. Occasional up to 30 lbs. force.
Environmental Conditions
  • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Time spent on site in medical/hospital setting.
Mental/Visual
  • Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
