Job summary

PeaceHealth is seeking a Surgical Technologist for Ketchikan Medical Center in Alaska. You will assist the surgical team by preparing and maintaining the sterile field and supporting operations in an OR with four suites on a full-time day shift.

Required: accredited Surgical Technology program and at least 1 year in an OR; Basic Life Support on hire, CST preferred. The role offers relocation assistance, a signing bonus, and a comprehensive benefits package in a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

• Accredited Surgical Technology program or recognized training in surgical technology.
• Minimum 1 year of experience in a full-service operating room.
• Basic Life Support certification required; CST preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and inventory sterile setup for operations and pass items to the surgical team.
• Maintain sterile field and ensure adherence to asepsis during procedures.
• Assist in patient movement and positioning as needed.
• Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instrumentation and manage room turnover.
• Access digital information and preference lists as required.
• Participate in safety initiatives and quality programs such as SCIP/SCOAP.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Hospital: 25-bed critical access hospital with level IV trauma center

Position Details

This position is responsible for assisting the Surgical team during operative procedures by performing a variety of technical duties to primarily assist in responsibility for the preparation and maintenance of the surgical sterile field for the operative patient.

Essential Functions

• Arrange and inventory sterile set-up for operation and passes items as needed to the surgical team.
• Understand and apply the principles of asepsis. Establish and maintain sterile field and assure team maintains sterile environment.
• Assist in preparation and moving of patients.
• Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes instrumentation. Assists with clean-up and room turnover.
• Access computer information as needed, such as preference lists and digital images.
• Participates in all safety initiatives. Adheres to programs such as SCIP and SCOAP quality initiatives.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

• Accredited Program Preferred: Surgical Technology or recognized course of training as a Surgical Technologist

Experience

• Required: Min 1-year experience as a surgical technologist in a full-service operating room
• Required: Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply age specific principles of growth and development and life stages to meet each patient’s needs.

Credentials

• Required: Upon Hire Basic Life Support Certification
• Preferred: Certified Surgical Technologist

Working Conditions

Lifting

• Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).
• Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment and perform precise procedures.
• Ability to move around area with occasional sitting.
• Frequent reaching/ bending/ squatting/ kneeling/ grasping.
• Lift/Carry: Frequently up to 15 lbs. Occasionally up to 20 lbs.
• Push/Pull: Frequently up to 20 lbs. force. Occasional up to 30 lbs. force.

Environmental Conditions

• Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
• Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
• Time spent on site in medical/hospital setting.

Mental/Visual

• Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
• Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
