Job summary

The Oakton College Enrollment Center is seeking a Peer Advisor to support academic advising, answer basic questions, and connect students with success resources at the Des Plaines campus. You will also promote OATSS services both on campus and virtually, helping students prepare for appointments with staff advisors.

Position runs September 2026 to May 2027, 10–15 hours per week with a flexible schedule that adapts to peak periods.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled at Oakton College during Fall and Spring (6+ credits).
  • GPA at least 2.33 and in good academic standing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop understanding of advising policies and resources.
  • Assist students with degree evaluation and MyOakton basics.
  • Help students understand course registration policies.
  • Perform front-line Enrollment Center tasks (check-in, follow-ups).
  • Promote OATSS programs and services on campus or virtually.
  • Coordinate flyers and invitations for academic success campaigns.
  • Represent OATSS at campus events and workshops.
  • Support departmental projects (data entry, errands).
  • Model professionalism to students and families.
  • Attend Peer Advisor meetings and training.

Job description

Overview:

The Peer Advisor position is designed to provide support for the academic advising process, to assist students with basic advising questions, to connect Oakton students with academic success resources, and to promote services available within the Office of Advising, Transitions, and Student Success (OATSS). Peer advisors will work within the Enrollment Center at either the Des Plaines or Skokie campus and support students by answering common questions related to registration, course planning, advising and registration tools, as well as preparation for appointments with staff advisors. Peer advisors will also spend time working outside of the Enrollment Center and virtually to promote and support OATSS services and programs.

Schedule Flexibility

Student schedule will fluctuate during the academic year based on the department's peak seasons, projects, and initiatives. Student will work with supervisor to determine a fixed schedule. Once approved/finalized, students are expected to follow through with their determined schedule with minimal adjustments.

Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities and Learning Outcomes:
  • Develop and maintain a fundamental understanding of academic policies and procedures, academic advising operations, and college resources. (CT, PF)
  • Assist students in understanding their U. Achieve degree/certificate evaluation, set up a Transferology account, and learn basic functions of the MyOakton Student Profile. (PF, LD, CM, EI)
  • Assist students in understanding the policies related to the course registration process. (CM, LD, EI)
  • Perform "front- line" operations within the Enrollment Center, including but not limited to checking students in for advising appointments, setting up follow-up appointments, and assisting students in their preparation to meet with an advisor. (PF, CM, TC, EI)
  • Promote OATSS programs and services held virtually or on campus by "tabling" on Student Street at various points in the academic year. (LD, CM, EI)
  • Coordinate efforts (i.e. create and distribute flyers, create virtual invitations, reserve tables, place catering orders, etc.) to promote academic success campaigns throughout the academic year. (LD, CM, EI)
  • Participate in campus event as a representation of OATSS, including but not limited to Advising and Registration Workshop, Fall Fest, ARW follow-up workshops, and Registration Rally. (TW, EI)
  • Participate in ongoing departmental projects as assigned by supervisor, including but not limited to data entry, program preparation, and running office-related errands. (PF, TC)
  • Serve as a role model to Oakton students and as a positive representative of the Office of Advising, Transitions, and Student Success to all students and their families. (CD, CM, LD, EI)
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled Peer Advisor meetings and training. (CD, PF, TW)

Candidate Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Other abilities):
  • Must be a currently enrolled at Oakton College in at least six credit hours during the Fall and Spring semesters. Employment over the summer is allowed for students taking at least 1 credit class during the summer, or students continuing registration into the following Fall semester.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.33 or higher and be in good academic standing at Oakton College.
  • Display strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills and the potential to develop these skills.
  • Willing and able to serve as a role model and leader on campus in regards to academic success.
  • Desire to learn about all the resources, services, opportunities, policies, and people at Oakton.
  • Ability to work independently, as well deal with people of various personalities and cultural backgrounds.
  • Capacity to listen and respond to individual and group questions/concerns.
  • Ability to help others problem-solve and/or assist in seeking solutions.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
