Nutrition Services Assistant – 5 hours per day (Part‑Time) – West Seaford Elementary School
Position Purpose
Under the direct supervision of the cafeteria manager or supervisor, assist in maintaining an orderly and safe atmosphere in the cafeteria and in other designated locations by helping and supervising students at mealtime.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with preparation of food items (entrees, baked goods, desserts, salads, sandwiches, etc.) under the direction of the manager or cook.
- Deliver and distribute breakfast meals to arriving students.
- Supply and restock the serving line with food and supplies.
- Provide positive customer service to students and adults.
- Maintain smooth operation of the line and keep serving areas and counters clean.
- Practice portion control.
- Prepare the dishwasher for operation; wash/ load dishes or remove dishes from the machine.
- Restock service or preparation areas with clean dishes, trays, and flatware.
- Check the dish machine for acceptable wash and rinse temperatures; report problems to the manager.
- Clean the dishwasher and dishroom; defrost the dish machine weekly as scheduled.
- Prepare the cash register before meal service and process transactions accurately, recording free, reduced‑price, and charged meals.
- Clean and sanitize equipment and work areas, using chemicals safely.
- Maintain records of all food and supplies used each day.
- Practice safe food handling and meet health, sanitation, and safety standards.
- Operate equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assist with other duties assigned by the Nutrition Services Manager or Supervisor.
Qualifications & Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read, write, and perform simple arithmetic.
- Willingness to complete Units I–IV of the School Food Service Training Program within three years; ServeSafe certification recommended.
- Neat appearance and adherence to dress code.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective organizational and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to maintain composure and work under pressure.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others.
- Commitment to confidentiality regarding student information.
Physical & Mental Demands
- Lift up to 50 pounds.
- Work in a cafeteria environment with varying temperatures.
- Manual dexterity and ability to work under pressure.
- Perform duties in a standard school cafeteria environment and in outdoor weather.
