Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Health is seeking a Health Educator to join the WIC program, providing nutrition education, health screenings, referrals, and personalized support to pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children. You will conduct nutrition education, inform participants about benefits and rights, perform health assessments, and coordinate referrals to community resources.

Experience in nutrition education and WIC program knowledge are preferred.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in nutritional education or counseling, food service, or administrative services.
• Six semester hours in food and/or nutrition services.
• One year of vocational or technical school training in a dietetic assistant curriculum.
• Experience Substitution: Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct nutrition education and outreach to pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants, and children.
• Educates WIC participants and caregivers on program benefits, participant rights and responsibilities, WIC-approved foods, and shopping procedures.
• Performs anthropometric measurements and health assessments for WIC participants.
• Conducts income and nutrition screenings and enters participant information into the LA WIC system.
• Reviews and assesses participant vaccination records and provides referrals to appropriate health and community resources.
• Collects blood samples and performs hemoglobin testing for WIC participants in accordance with program requirements.
• Schedules WIC appointments and follows up with participants regarding missed appointments and required services.
