The University of Rochester is seeking a part-time Patient Meals Service Assistant in Rochester, NY. Responsibilities include assembling, delivering, and collecting patient meals while maintaining sanitation and temperature control.

The role supports patients and families with dietary preferences and works under supervision of the Food & Nutrition Services team. You will also assist with nourishments, menu selections, inventory, and unit stocking, contributing to a high standard of patient care

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, deliver and collect patient meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) promptly while maintaining temperature and accommodating dietary requests.
  • Pass nourishments and fill water pitchers; assist with patient menu selections by phone or at bedside.
  • Record meals served, collect patient preferences and communicate changes to Diet Technician as needed.
  • Keep floor stock levels by daily inventory and completing blue orders; stock supplies on assigned units.
  • Perform cleaning duties and ensure food safety practices; use thermometer to verify proper temperatures.

Compensation Range: $18.75 - $25.44

The referenced pay range represents the first and last step pay rates for this job, as set forth in the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Individual pay will be set in accordance with terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities:

Responsible to assemble, serve, and collect all patient meals, between meal snacks and floor stock. Maintains sanitation of work areas and follows sanitary food practices at all times.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED: Patient Service Assistant Manager, Assistant Director of Food and Nutrition, Food and Nutrition Services

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED: Microwave, oven, Refrigerator, Freezer, Coffee maker, Food and Meal carts, Telephone, Pager.

TYPICAL DUTIES:
  • Assembles and delivers patient trays for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner meals in a timely manner to ensure temperature retention. Use judgment in approaching patients and families and in satisfying their requests for adjustments within their prescribed diet. In this capacity, serves as an effective representative of the hospital to patients, families and visitors.
  • Passes all nourishments as well as fills water pitchers. Pass all tube feedings and infant formulas.
  • Passes all patient specific menus. Assists with patient menu selection on the telephone or at bedside.
  • Collects and submits all completed patient menu selections. Communicates patient preferences and requests for nourishment's to the Diet Technician as necessary.
  • Collects all soiled meal trays from Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner meals. Also, moves soiled carts to elevator area.
  • Records all patients in¿s and Out's. This includes amount of food eaten and liquid consumed by all patients being monitored.
  • Maintains appropriate levels of floor stock by completing a daily inventory and filling the "Blue Orders" as necessary. Stocks the blue orders supplies on assigned units.
  • Responsible for supplying all necessary late trays and substitute selections for patients. Consults with the Dietetic Technician or Nutrition Services Supervisor and use judgment in adjusting trays for changes in patients' diet orders and/or new admission.
  • Performs all assigned cleaning duties such as unit microwave, freezer, refrigerator, galley work surfaces.
  • When microwaving trays, checks to see food is brought to proper temperature by using a thermometer to test.
  • Assembles trays on the trayline for meal service to patients. Assists with limited food preparation, portioning and serving both in the tray assembly area and on the units, when appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma with ability to understand, read, write and speak English and with experience in a service environment; demonstrated ability to work independently; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
