The Nursing Supervisor is a Registered Nurse (RN) who is licensed to practice nursing in accordance with Chapter N6 of the State of Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.

As a member of the Marquette University Medical Clinic team, this position provides health care to students, with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. This role serves as a health care resource and advocate for students and their families. The Nursing Supervisor serves in an advisory capacity for nursing practice issues with medical staff and contributes to organizational strategic planning.

Duties and Responsibilities

Supervision: Responsible for the supervision of nursing and front desk staff, which includes but is not limited to hiring, terming, disciplinary actions, performance management, staff development, and timekeeping.

Scheduling: Manages schedules, including ensuring appropriate coverage, setting appointments for students with nursing care staff, and performing daily operations in the scheduling system. Appointment types include immunizations, TB skin tests, STI screening for asymptomatic individuals, medication administration, and wound care.

Medication Management & Inventory: Dispenses medications from MUMC Pharmacy as prescribed by a medical provider. Reviews directions and pertinent information from medication teaching sheets with patients; administer oral, IM, IV, and subcutaneous medications pursuant to medical orders from both MUMC providers and outside providers; and monitors medication and vaccine inventory to ensure supplies are stocked and ordered as needed.

Immunizations & TB Screening: Reviews vaccine records and administers vaccines following CDC guidelines and State of Wisconsin protocols. Administers and reads TB Skin Tests. Educates patients about positive results and the need for follow-up care/medication treatment with referral to TB Control Clinic/Milwaukee Health Dept. Assists with off-site TB test clinics with the Dental School. Implements and facilitates the immunization compliance policy of the university, ensuring students receive vaccines and TB screenings as required.

Clinic Policies & Procedures: Performs clinical procedures such as first aid/emergency care, obtains vital signs, IV placement/infusion, EKG, wound/burn care, ear lavage, eye irrigation, vision screening, pulse ox readings, nebulizer treatments, peak flow measurements, orthopedic equipment/teaching, and rooming patients.

Nurse Triage & Student Walk‑Ins: Evaluates student subjective and objective symptoms and vital signs for in-person or telephonic triage. Collects and documents data and uses problem‑solving skills to determine a plan of care for students.

Professional Development: Establishes and maintains core clinical competencies for nursing and medical assistant staff, implementing core skills into the annual review process to ensure compliance. This includes providing in‑service education, updates, and ongoing training to support staff development. Participates in professional development activities and fosters a culture of continuous learning by encouraging direct reports to engage in continuing education opportunities, including in‑services, training sessions, seminars, and conferences.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Requires graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Must be currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Wisconsin.
  • BLS certified.
  • Minimum of six years of nursing experience in an ambulatory care setting. A minimum of three years of Supervisory Experience.
  • Critical Thinking Skills, Including The ability to assess medical needs accurately in the moment. In‑depth knowledge of routine vaccines, indications, contraindications, and administration guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of MUMC formulary medications.
  • Working knowledge of tuberculosis, latent infection vs. active disease. Must be able to administer intradermal injection, recognize a positive result and educate students on interventions as part of their continuing care plan.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
  • Understands and follows OSHA and infection control measures for environmental cleanliness.
  • Interest in and commitment to the educational and preventive aspects of college health are required. Must have a professional practice style that upholds Marquette University's mission.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of travel vaccine indications, contraindications, and administration guidelines.
  • Basic computer skills, including e‑mailing, Teams meetings, and Skype IM.
  • Proficient with faxing and copy machines.
  • Proficiency using medical equipment, including but not limited to electronic blood pressure/pulse/pulse ox/temp, EKG, otoscope, stethoscope, and orthopedic equipment.
