Job summary

The Kalamazoo County Jail seeks registered nurses to provide medical and nursing services within a 24-hour secure facility. Nurses follow the nursing process, collaborate with mental health providers, contracted physicians, and local hospitals to ensure continuity of care and patient-centered treatment in line with state jail standards.

Duties include assessing and treating medical concerns, administering medications, performing MDOC-required physicals, and maintaining secure medication

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in nursing from an accredited college or university.
  • 1–3 years of related nursing experience.
  • Registered Nurse license in Michigan.
  • BSN and 3–5 years of nursing experience for Nurse II.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, evaluates, and treats medical concerns/conditions.
  • Administers medications on a regular basis.
  • Evaluates newly arrested individuals including vital signs, injuries, intoxication, and other health concerns.
  • Conducts physicals as required by the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC).
  • Maintains medical inventory and supplies; manages and secures jail resident medications, including distribution schedules and documentation; collaborates with providers.
  • Assists in creating and updating agency protocols and policies related to medical needs.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY

The purpose of these positions is to provide medical and nursing services to people who are resident within the Kalamazoo County Jail, a 24 hour, physically secured criminal justice facility. Nursing care is delivered using the established nursing process, including assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, of applicable state jail standards, and all relevant laws, regulations, and under the direction of the Sheriff’s Office contracted physician. This position collaborates with interdisciplinary partners, including mental health providers, contracted physicians, local hospitals, and pharmacies, to ensure continuity of care, maintain security and safety standards, and deliver effective, patient-centered treatment in accordance with accepted best practices..

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assesses, evaluates, and treats medical concerns/conditions.
  • Administers medications on a regular basis.
  • Evaluates newly arrested people including assessing, vital signs, injuries, intoxication, and/or any other health concerns.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Nurse I
Required Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing
  • One to three (1 to 3) years of related work experience in nursing
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Nurse II
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university
  • Three to Five (3 to 5)years of work experience in nursing
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
