Job summary

UVA Community Health is seeking a Nurse Extern for the Mother Baby unit in Manassas, VA. The program runs for 8 weeks, starting June 14, 2027, with 36-40 hours per week across rotating day and night shifts following orientation.

Applicants must be nursing students in their final year with graduation between Dec 2027 and May 2028; CS/ASN/BSN progressions accepted. This role supports patient care under an RN and may require travel between campus facilities as needed.

Requirements

Must be a nursing student entering their last year of nursing school with a graduation date between December 2027- May 2028.

Important Dates

Program Duration: 8 Weeks, Beginning June 14 th 2027, Ending August 7 st 2027

Schedule

• 36-40 hours, three, 12-hour shifts a week following orientation.
• Candidates must have the flexibility to work either day or night shifts to match the schedule of the preceptor they are paired with.

JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse (RN) in an inpatient or outpatient setting.

• Assists patients with personal care as needed for optimal recovery during hospitalization.

Performs basic nursing skills as delegated by an RN and in accordance with policy and procedures to promote patient health and wellness.

• Provides for a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
• Performs administrative support functions.
• Maintains necessary skills and competencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Currently enrolled student nurses who graduate December of 2025-May 2027. BSN students who have completed their 3rd year; ASN students who have completed their 1st year.

Students may remain employed as a Nurse Extern until graduation completion. Following graduation and board completion they will need to apply for open positions and continue through the hiring process.
