Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems seeks a Nurse Extern to assist with direct and indirect patient care under supervision in a hospital setting. The role runs 36 hours per week for 10 weeks and offers hands-on nursing experience during the short-term program.

Responsibilities include assisting with daily living activities, safety, and comfort measures, along with maintaining a clean environment and inventory. Prior nursing coursework is required, with preferred acute care exposure.

Qualifications

• Completion of first semester junior year in BSN program (dependent on school curriculum).
• Associate Degree or Diploma programs require completion of first year or two semesters of basic nursing courses.
• Prior acute care experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist with activities of daily living, comfort care, safety, nutritional support and selected diagnostic/therapeutic tasks under supervision.
• Maintain a clean, safe environment, sterilization, and ensure adequate inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Functions under direction of RN or licensed practitioner in patient care, education, and rounds as needed.
