GENERAL SUMMARY:

Unit Overview:

Cardiovascular Surgical Stepdown

The unit provides a higher level of monitoring than a general medical-surgical floor, but less intensive care than an ICU.

A Nurse Extern may get to experience patients with:

• Continuous cardiac telemetry
• Vital signs and hemodynamic status
• Cardiac rhythms and ECG changes
• Chest tubes and surgical drains
• Temporary pacemakers
• Oxygen requirements
• Postoperative complications
• Fluid balance and medication management

A Nurse Extern might gain experience by observing:

• Cardiac assessment
• Telemetry interpretation
• Postoperative care
• Management of cardiovascular medications
• Recognition of cardiac emergencies
• Care coordination with surgeons, cardiologists, and advanced practice providers
