Job description

Nuclear Shielding and Criticality Engineer for a long-term, contract opportunity, 100% remote.

Overview:
Our client is looking for a highly capable and motivated Nuclear Shielding and Criticality Engineer. The successful candidate has strong skills using MCNP 6.2 to perform radiation shielding calculations for both gammas and neutrons. Experience in criticality safety is desirable.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Perform radiation shielding design and analysis for advanced nuclear reactors, including calculating dose rates, activation rates, neutron fluence rates, and energy deposition rates.
2. Develop radiation sources based on material activation analysis for non-fuel in-vessel components.
3. Perform criticality calculations and develop upper subcritical limits (USLs).
4. Establish and maintain formal documentation of analysis results.
5. Adapt to new responsibilities as they arise, learning and applying specialized skills.

Position Requirements:

1. B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering or equivalent experience; Advanced degree and 5+ years of relevant experience with nuclear analysis preferred. For less than 5 years’ experience, a college transcript is required.
2. Strong MCNP skills and experience with performing radiation shielding calculations for both gammas and neutrons are required. Experience in criticality safety desirable.
3. Familiarity with variance reduction using MCNP, and features such as surface source read/write, mesh tallies, and weight windows. Familiarity with ADVANTG for weight windows generation is a plus.
4. Knowledgeable or highly motivated to quickly learn basic nuclear reactor design concepts to meaningfully support the engineering team.
5. Strong programming skills in Python is necessary.
6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
7. Ability and professionalism to work within published regulatory guidelines required.
8. Experience working under NQA-1 quality program desired.
9. Strong computational expertise desired.
10. Experience with Attila /Attila4MC and computer-aided drafting (e.g., SolidWorks, SpaceClaim/ANSYS, Cubit) is a plus.
11. Fast reactor experience a plus.
