Job summary

Aalo Atomics in Austin, TX seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with deep ASME BPVC Section III expertise to lead the design of reactor vessels and pressure-boundary systems for a sodium-cooled reactor. This hands-on role demands independent work in a fast-paced startup environment.

You will develop code-compliant designs, perform analyses, and produce documentation while collaborating with manufacturing, quality, licensing teams, and supporting ASME stamp certification.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
• 7+ years of mechanical design experience relevant to pressure vessels.
• Expert knowledge of ASME BPVC Section III and related subsections.
• Experience with code calculations, stress analysis, fatigue, and load combinations.
• Experience designing vessels, shells, heads, nozzles, penetrations, and flanges.
• Ability to drive technical work to documented decisions.
• PE license is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and ASME BPVC Section III compliance for reactor vessels and pressure-boundary components.
• Perform and own code calculations for pressure, thermal, fatigue, buckling, seismic loads.
• Classify components per safety and quality requirements and establish design classifications.
• Apply Section III rules to vessels, piping, supports, and containment structures.
• Develop design specifications, reports, and overpressure protection reports.
• Evaluate elevated-temperature design including creep and creep-fatigue where applicable.
• Own designs from concept through release, fabrication support, testing, and verification.
• Create CAD models, drawings, specifications, and calculation packages.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, materials, quality, licensing teams to resolve issues.
• Lead design reviews and communicate risks and trade-offs.
• Support prototype builds, supplier engagement, and testing.
