Job Summary for the Nuclear Medicine Technologist

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist provides services using radionuclides to assist in the diagnosis or treatment of disease. The technologist demonstrates knowledge of the human structure and functions, patient care, positioning, principles of nuclear medicine, radiation protection, and specialized techniques. The images are produced in accordance with the ARRT and CNMT standards.

Responsibilities of the Nuclear Medicine Technologist
  1. Perform Nuclear Medicine exams in accordance with SDMC Medical Imaging protocols.
  2. Administer prescribed pharmaceutical grade radioactive materials to patients as outlined by state/federal regulations.
  3. Demonstrate appropriate radioactive materials safety measures for self, other staff, and patients.
  4. Explain procedures to patients prior to the exam.
  5. Demonstrate proficiency with equipment used for NM exams (Spect Cameras, and PACS).
  6. Ensure availability of physician for procedures requiring the administration of medications and supervision.
  7. Perform duties to maintain department functions such as QC checks.
  8. Maintain required documentation regarding radioactive materials.
  9. Perform surveys and document findings of work area, patient rooms, and radioactive waste storage area.
  10. Adhere to policies related to Standard Precautions, Infection Control, and Radiation Safety guidelines.
Qualifications for the Nuclear Medicine Technologist

EDUCATION: Graduate from an approved Joint Review Committee on Education Program in Nuclear Medicine Technology program or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE: One year of experience as a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist preferred.

LICENSED/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Certified or Temporary Certified by Texas Department of State Health Services as a Medical Radiologic Technologist.

Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
